The Wine Road in Daruvar
The area of Daruvar is very popular for the good wine and the varieties of wine and this is a fact known by many wine experts. Wine growing is a tradition in the area which goes back to many years. The perfect wine growing conditions are present in the sunny and gentle hills of Papuk. Many ancient authors call the founders of the town as great winemakers. Besides using the thermal spa, the Romans also enjoyed wine as is clearly evident from many evidences found.
In the middle ages, two Benedictine abbeys used to cultivate vine, but after the Turks arrived the use and also the production of wine was not allowed. After the Turks left, in the Daruvar region came the Jankovic family. At this time the cultivation of wine was started again. In 1990 for the very last time, the century old barrel was used to ferment the wines. It was in 1995 that the count’s cellar was renovated into a wine boutique. This has been turned into a place where one can taste the different varieties of wine. The different varieties that are available here to taste are rajnski rizling, graševina, chardonnay and sauvignon. These can be tried by all the wine fans that visit the area.
The wine road in Daruvar stretches along a routw which has many vineyards and also wine cottages. At these cottages one can learn how wine is cultivated and can also try them. This 12 kilometres long road and it originates from the middle of the town and goes through the vineyards in Daruvar and also goes through the Petrov vrh forests and the road ends at a height which is 615 metres above sea level. At the top there is a ski resort, a ski lift and a mountain lodge.
