Trogir

Trogir is a small historic town situated on the Adriatic coast, just 30 km west of the city of Split, founded in the 3rd century BC by the Greek colonists. Its historic center has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997 and it is one of the best preserved Romanesque – Gothic towns in Europe. Trogir’s historic core, situated on a small island, with its orthogonal street plan which dates back to the Hellenistic period, treasures a high concentration of historic monuments from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods.

What to visit

Trogir fortressMedieval city core where you can visit numerous churches and monuments dating back to 13th century. Trogir has a rich and unique artistic heritage with numerous landmarks dating back to Ancient times, Medieval ages and modern ones. The old town is surrounded by city walls (15th century) and embraces well-preserved castle, tower, and palaces. The Fortress Kamerlengo dates back to 15th century, built by the republic of Venice as an expansion of Veriga Tower, built 100 years earlier. Kopnena Vrata or Land gate was once the main entrance to Trogir’s old town, built back in the 15th century as a vital part of city’s defenses along with city towers and walls. The Cathedral of St. Lawerence is a triple-naved basilica, built in 13th century on the foundations of another cathedral destroyed by Saracens in the 12th century. It was constructed in Romanesque – Gothic architectural style, as its construction lasted for several centuries. Amazing Cipiko big and small palaces, situated just across the Cathedral, were once home to the region’s most prominent family and will enchant you its rich facades in Venetian Gothic style. The Civic Museum is situated in Garagnin – Fanfogna palace, near the Land gate, and it is rich in details from the town’s tempestuous past, like ancient manuscripts and documents, Greek and Roman artifacts, paintings etc. The details of the antiques tell stories on their own and also complement the history of Trogir’s rich past. Many other landmarks like city loggia, churches, and Dominican monastery are impressive places to visit.

Beaches

There are numerous beaches and hidden bays in Trogir Riviera. The most popular beaches are situated on the island of Ciovo, just 3 km from the old center of Trogir. Okrug Copacabana is definitely one of the most popular ones, situated on the south side of Ciovo and stretching for more than 2 km. There are numerous services located along the shores of the beach. Other amazing beaches to spend your day on sunbathing, snorkeling and swimming are Kava Okrug Donji and Kava Slatine on Ciovo, Marinova Draga (small pebble beach, shallow water and lot of shadows, perfect for families with children) and the beach Krknjasi on the island of Drvenik.

Food

In Trogir, you can enjoy Dalmatian cuisine which is typically Mediterranean. Traditional Dalmatian dishes are made with herbs like sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, and oregano. There is a large use of extra virgin olive oil and garlic. Some of the traditional dishes we recommend you to try are: Dalmatian smoked ham, Olives and nearby islands famous goat cheese as an appetizer, Black risotto, Dalmatian pasticada (stewed beef in wine with prunes and vegetables) and grilled fish with vegetables. Locals mostly eat in small, intimate traditionally Dalmatian restaurants called Konoba, that prepare fresh local food and usually have lower prices than upscale restaurants. Small Medieval alleys in and around the old town offer many bars and restaurants with intimate and romantic atmosphere, delicious food and excellent wine.

This wonderful and enchanting town is served by the Split airport, as well as bus service from Split is available several times daily. There are two big yachting marinas in Trogir.

Nearby destinations that you could fit in your vacation are the islands of Brac, Hvar and Vis, the amazing historic city of Split, Roman ruins of Solin (Salona) and Kastela.
